Kobo is the major player in the ebook world that you’ve never heard of.

In Canada, however, where the company is based, it’s thought to be the market-share leader. It was acquired near the end of last year by Rakuten, a company considered the “Amazon of Japan,” and has started to build an ebook business there (for what it’s worth: a hard-to-crack market that isn’t promising for ebook publishers despite being one of the largest economies in the world with a very literate and technological population). In other countries, like the UK, South Africa and New Zealand, Kobo has a presence and is one of the only international players. Kobo is now in more than a dozen countries and is aggressively adding more.

This little upstart from Canada is trying to compete with the likes of Amazon, Google, Apple and Barnes & Noble.

Like those other companies, Kobo has its own set of devices that have been positively reviewed. Unlike Amazon, Google and Apple, it’s primarily focused on ebooks and e-reading. And, unlike Barnes & Noble, which is extremely U.S.-centric at this early stage of the game, it has international in its DNA. The company has been figuring out how to launch its business in other countries since early on when it expanded to the U.S. And Kobo has inked deals with the American Booksellers Association, a trade group for independent bookstores, and its equivalent in the UK to have indie bookshops sell its devices and ebooks.

Kobo Glo

Recently, Kobo became the first major international ebook player to launch in Brazil, which it did in Apple/Google/Amazon-like gala fashion with a celebrity-studded event at Brazil’s largest bookstore chain, Livraria Cultura. And it also recently came out that Kobo intends to support full EPUB 3 functionality by the third-quarter next year (this is very wonky, I know, but what it basically means is that it’s the first e-reading company to come out and say that it would support the latest accepted standard ebook file formats at some point — it makes the company somewhat cutting edge).

But wherever Kobo goes, Amazon and the others are already there or not far behind. Take Brazil. Hours after Kobo launched there, so did Amazon and Google.

The international ebook wars are going to be a dogfight — but underdog Kobo has a fighting chance.

The Paperwhite pulled in an impressive 8/10 in our review – and as we’re talking top of the eBook reader market here, we’ve gone the whole hog and popped the full 3G version of the device in our stocking of recommendations, at £169.

Amazon Kindle

Accept our apologies for pandering to the eBook behemoths with a double Kindle salvo, but at £69, the latest version of the entry-level Kindle simply has to feature on our list. Not distracted by launching the Paperwhite and the new Kindle Fire tablets back in September, Amazon refreshed the old E Ink favourite too – and at just 8.7mm thick and 170g, it is sure to slip into your pocket easier than any paperback book.

This is what the Kindle is all about. The out-and-out practicality that lets it slot into you daily life with the minimum of fuss. Of all the expensive, dazzling gadgets that arrive at ITProPortal HQ, it is still the Kindle that remains one of the most popular and respected devices in the office. Even die-hard material-book loyalists have been converted by the Kindle, with its 6in non-glare screen (with 167ppi pixel density) and crystal-clear text that is actually more comfortable to read than your average ink on a page.

Probably their biggest rival is the Nook line from Barnes & Noble, of which the Nook Simple Touch GlowLight is its strongest proposition right now. With a built-in light for in-the-dark reading, this device goes head-to-head with the aforementioned Paperwhite, and matches the £109 price point of the non-3G version of Amazon’s device. Its digital library boasts 2.5 million books, newspapers and magazines, showing Barnes & Noble means business with its UK arrival earlier this year.

Unlike some its rivals, the Nook Touch GlowLight sports a rubberised bezel which may make you feel a little more confident leaving it in the hands of children. It also offers seven different font sizes on its 6in 600 x 800-pixel touchscreen, has battery life of over a month, and is 12mm thick, with a weight of 197g. Its overall performance warranted a 9/10 score in our recent review, so if you’re comfortable straying outside the Amazon ecosystem, the Nook Simple Touch GlowLight could be the ideal eBook reader for your Christmas list.

Kobo Glo

Another eBook reader you shouldn’t be ignoring is the Kobo Glo. It joins the burgeoning lit-screen club which sets it apart from earlier devices, and its ComfortLight technology promises to bring readability in a wider range of lighting conditions. With the user able to open a brightness slider and choose between around 12 levels of illumination, it’s not a simple case of light and dark with the Kobo Glo, enabling you to set its impressive 1,024 x 768-pixel screen to optimum levels, whatever your surroundings.

Sony Reader PRS-T2

Heading back to work after the Christmas period, some may be worried about pulling out their shiny new eBook reader on the Tube and realising everyone else has the same one. Opting for the Sony Reader ahead of the competition outlined above should lower the chances of such a disastrous scenario, but the smaller reputation doesn’t equate to a less worthy device.

The Sony Reader is a touch taller than your average model but is the lightest on our list at 164g, so you should be free of the dreaded mid-read arm ache. E Ink Pearl technology is splashed across its 6in, 800 x 600-pixel, anti-glare touchscreen .

Sony’s roomy model has 1.3GB of storage which can handle up to 1,300 books at a time, allowing the user to carry a sizeable library wherever they go. For those with really expansive collections, the Reader also includes a handy microSD card slot which pushes the boundaries to an additional 32GB of storage. Annotations are enabled and Evernote compatibility further enhances the note taking capabilities.

Priced £119, yes the Sony Reader is a little pricey for a non-lit model, but we think it’s one of the most attractive designs on the market.

Kobo expands to South Africa to compete against Kindle

 

E-reader company Kobo is expanding to South Africa and hopes to make up 50 percent of the country’s small ebook market within a year, competing against Amazon’s Kindle.

 Ebook retailer Kobo announced its first African launch Tuesday evening: The company is partnering with South African retail chain Pick n Pay to sell the Kobo Touch e-reader and ebooks. Kobo promises local content available in Afrikaans and English.

The Kobo Touch will retail for 995 rand (USD $114). Amazon ships the Kindle to South Africa and it is also available in some retail stores there. The country’s ebook market is estimated to make up less than 1.5 percent of the total books market.

Books Live also reports that Kobo business development VP Todd Humphrey “said the company wants to own 50 percent of the SA ebook market within one year.”

Kobo Announces A New Android Tablet To Take On Amazon

 

Would anybody be so bold to announce a new line of eReaders and Android tablets the same day as Amazon’s big press event? The Kindle Fire HD and Paperwhite are immediately impressive, but is there an alternative? Kobo thinks they have just the thing.

Kobo announced today that they will be bringing four new devices to market this year. Three of the devices are updates to their eReader line while the other is an entirely new direction for the company – a 7-inch Android tablet. Kobo’s eReaders are currently in the hands of more than 10 million people around the world, but they obviously want to expand that.

Taking on the Paperwhite and the Nook is the Kobo Glo. It uses what they call ComfortLight technology to provide a superior reading experience. In reality, it uses the same frontlit screen technology that the Kindle Paperwhite and Nook use to replicate a realistic reading experience. The device will be available on October 1 for $129.99. For comparison, the Wi-Fi Paperwhite will only be $119.

Kobo is also taking on the original Kindle with the Kobo Mini. The 5-inch tablet is reportedly the smallest and lightest eReader on the market. It uses the same E Ink screen that other eReaders feature but offers the convenience of being able to fit inside a pocket. It will hold up to 1,000 eBooks. The Kobo Mini will retail for $79.99 on October 1.

The Kobo Touch is already available, but the company decided to give it a price cut to remain competitive. The eReader is now only $99.99. It features new software that Kobo says will help readers “personalize the reading experience, get recommendations and discover new content.”

The major announcement from Kobo today, however, comes in the form of the Kobo Arc. It’s a 7-inch Android tablet that runs on a customized version of Ice Cream Sandwich. The UI is called Tapestries and it pins content on the homepage to recommend new content to users. One major advantage of the Kobo Arc is that it’s able to access the Google Play store for even more apps than what Amazon offers on their store. The Kobo Arc launches in November in two flavors – 8GB for $199.99 and 16GB for $249.99.

While it lacks the killer presentation that Amazon put on, Kobo has a decent line up of devices for the holiday season. They cost more than Amazon’s offerings, but the Kobo brand has its loyal fans. They’re sure to eat up these new products, and they just might get some new fans this year as well.

The standard gripe among old-media romantics these days is that nobody reads real books anymore, but perhaps those folks just haven’t been to Japan.

But they may not prefer them for long.   

The Tokyo-based e-commerce giant Rakuten (4755: JASDAQ) introduced its Kobo Touch e-reader on Thursday, and early reports suggest that the device is already a hit. The Kobo jumped almost instantly to the top spot on Rakuten’s website of more than 100,000,000 products since it became available for pre-order on July 2. Kobo CEO Mike Serbinis said in a statement that the company was “thrilled to see this response from the Japanese people.”

Other electronics companies have tried amid little fanfare to ignite an e-book boom in the world’s second-largest publishing market. Sony (NYSE: ADR), whose LIBRIe electronic reading device practically kicked off the e-book industry in 2004, has been unable to create much interest, even on its home turf.

Datou Amazon?

With the arrival of the Kobo Touch, however, Amazon’s Japanese debut — whenever it happens — may be too little, too late. The Kobo Touch uses the EPUB 3.0 format, the industry standard, which supports Japanese-language layout and vertical text and ruby characters. It also supports Manga titles, which have already proven popular among younger Japanese consumers who read them via cellphones. 

At Tokyo’s E-Book Expo earlier this month, Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani touted his soon-to-be-released Kobo Touch by passing out T-shirts inscribed with the words, “Datou Amazon” or “Destroy Amazon.” Some publishers at the expo applauded Mikitani’s message. Still reluctant to do business with the notorious American giant, they are hopeful that the inevitable foray into e-publishing doesn’t have to involve selling out.

That may not bode well for the future of paper books in Japan, but at least the book industry there will live to see its next chapter.

Don’t Believe the eBook Monopoly Ploy

Don’t believe all that hype about government interference that is designed to foster an Amazon monopoly of the ebook business. What the six major publishers were alleged to have done was collude in fixing prices that, if true, was a desperate act that they must have known would fall afoul of anti-trust laws.

The new ploy by book publishers is to characterize Amazon as a monopoly poised to take over and dictate terms and run rampant over those who create ebook content. That is like saying Starbucks is a monopoly because it currently dominates the coffee retail business.

As an author who introduced the SONY reader, the very first reading device at the 2007 Las Vegas Consumer Electronics show to what was then an indifferent audience, I felt certain that one day e-readers would dominate the marketplace. I thought SONY was really on to something and would one day be the imaginative leader of the ebook industry.

Soon after the SONY launch, Amazon introduced the Kindle and followed through with verve and imagination to become, as we speak, the dominant force in ebook content and sales. I was an evangelist for these devices largely because of the ease of purchase, clarity and wide variety of available content and, above all, convenience, especially for those of us to whom reading is an important part of our lives.

Barnes and Noble, a super successful big-box book chain, apparently saw the advantages of getting into the ebook business early on, created an infrastructure and then, in an act of counter-productive bean cutting, abandoned its ebook business entirely. I remember meeting Steve Riggio, Barnes and Noble’s chief honcho, at the home of the late Bill Riley, one of his board members, and politely chastising him for getting out of that business.

Sure, it was light cocktail chatter, but I could tell that he was contemplating getting back into ebooks. It must have soon become apparent that in order to survive, Riggio had to get into that business, and Barnes and Noble did indeed with its excellent reader, the Nook. Unfortunately, they were late and are now playing catch-up. But to dismiss the Nook as a competitor to the Kindle is to sell Barnes and Noble short. Early on, they revolutionized the book business with their big-box stores and merchandising techniques and will undoubtedly ratchet up the ebook competition.

Then there is Kobo, a Canadian company trying to earn its bones in the business. They have to be counted as a future factor in the competition. There are others, as well, trying to crack into the coming e-reader bonanza.

The introduction of Apple’s iPad gave the publishers, as they might have seen it, leverage to fix their ebook prices. You couldn’t blame them since the challenges posed by ebooks are a very real threat to the profitable print publishing business. I have a feeling they believed that Apple would, like everything they touched, eventually dominate the e-book business as well, hence their alleged collusion.

Although I am an Apple guy and a great admirer and loyal user of their products, I did not think that the iPad would dominate the book business. It doesn’t and, in my opinion, will not. My opinion is based on the fact that the tablet concept is too distractive for the customer, to whom reading is a centerpiece of their leisure activities.

Marketers use a cute term called “immersive reading.” It is redundant. All book reading is immersive and requires from its devotees time and, above all, mental concentration.

Somewhere I read that the great Steve Jobs thought that reading, meaning the content that is defined as “books,” would decline against the onslaught of other cyber activities, which he seemed to deem more important. Indeed, he must have fashioned his foray into the book business with that in mind. With a million distractions now available on the iPad, the so-called “immersive reader” is relegated to be merely one of the pack, with “book” content hardly in the same exclusive domain of a solo device.

I am well aware that Amazon is having great success with its “Fire” tablet. My sense is that it will have exceptional value to Apps Aficionados but might not to book content readers. In my view, those who are repetitive “immersive” readers of all ages will stick with the solo reading device.

What could be a worry for Amazon, Nook, and Kobo would be if Apple decides to come out with its own solo reading device.

I have not dealt with the plight of the author, the creator of the content without which the traditional publishing business would have to close its doors. What could happen is that authors might find it more advantageous to create their own self-publishing business models, which has been my choice, join together to create cooperative ventures, or throw their oar in with numerous enterprises serving authors who have the means to self-publish with all the bells and whistles of traditional publishers.

As it stands now, the publishers are busy scratching their heads and trying to come up with measures to assure their future viability. Someone, perhaps far outside the publishing box or an enterprising author might come up with a business plan that will make economic sense. We shall see.

Fear not. Readers must read. Writers must write. It has always been thus. And creative minds will prevail to eventually figure out ways to bring the two together in ways profitable to each.

Kobo Intends on Offering Books and eReaders in Brazil Q2 2012

 Amazon is not the only company focusing on the the largest market in South America to distribute e-readers and eBooks. During a Rakuten Super Expo yesterday Todd Humphrey, EVP, Business Development at Kobo said that his company will be launching in Brazil in the second quarter.

Kobo intends on forming partnerships with bookstores in Brazil to sell their devices to the end user. It is rumored that the company is in negotiations with Culture or Scott, two of the largest bookstores. The company intends on actively marketing their Kobo Vox Android Tablet and their Kobo Touch eReader.

Kobo is no stranger to international expansion and has pushed hard into Europe. You can find localized versions of the books in Spain, France, Germany and the UK. The company always courts publishing partners to offer books by home grown authors and bestsellers that orientated in those countries. Since Rakuten aqquired Kobo last year, at the top of the priority list is international expansion. “We are working with Brazilian publishers and closing sales agreements with retailers, as well as a large chain of bookstores to distribute the eBook readers,” said Humphrey, which was excited about the digital book market in Brazil, “In over 5 years, 50% of digital books will be in Brazil “bet.

It looks like the next battle ground for e-Readers and Books will be in Brazil. Amazon will be marketing their own closed ecosystem that has audiobooks, self-publishing and many more devices. Kobo rides on the premise of supporting a widely adopted ePUB format that allows customers to easily load in their own books.
