Microsoft Breaks Out New Surface Tablet #FED_ebooks #ereader #microsoft

Microsoft aims to straddle two worlds with new Surface tablet

Several years behind its Silicon Valley rivals, Microsoft is betting it can play catch-up on tablets and smartphones by leveraging its dominance in the workplace and its success in the living room.

First Edition Design PublishingJust imagine Microsoft offering its Office software exclusively on the Surface while providing access to Xbox games and videos. It could be the right mix of professional and personal elements — a combination that Apple and Google haven’t been able to achieve fully. Then add the other online assets Microsoft has amassed over the years: the videoconferencing service Skype, the professional social network Yammer and the search engine Bing.

The potential is great, analysts say. That is, if the notoriously bureaucratic tech giant doesn’t end up repeating its past mistakes.

“Microsoft has had all the pieces for a consumer strategy for years, and they’ve totally and utterly failed time and time again,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner research. Standout failures include Microsoft’s Zune music player and the Kin smartphone, which were panned by critics and fed the reputation of a company that was out of touch with consumers.

“The trick is if they can tie it all together into a compelling story and get consumers to buy into a whole ecosystem of devices and apps, which is what Apple has done so well and Google has done well, too,” Gartenberg said.

On Tuesday, Microsoft’s stock shot up by nearly 3 percent, though the shares are about half the value of their high reached in December 1999.

When it comes to tablets, Microsoft hopes office workers will want the Surface’s keyboard and stylus to produce Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations and then take the gadget home to watch movies. Microsoft on Wednesday is expected to roll out at least one new Windows 8 smartphone that will add to its mobile ecosystem.

Microsoft’s Office suite of apps has a stranglehold on businesses. It’s also gained a foothold in households with its Xbox Live, which has 40 million subscribers. The service charges customers a fee to play games online and watch streaming videos through their game console, which has sold 66 million units.

When it announced the Surface in Los Angeles on Monday night, chief executive Steve Ballmer said the device will straddle the tablet and PC worlds. The higher-end Surface will run the full version of Windows 8.

“No compromises,” Ballmer said. Microsoft didn’t announce a price or shipment date.

Apple, in contrast, appears to have drawn a brighter line between its tablet and Mac notebook, which for now run different operating systems, analysts said.

Microsoft’s move was prompted by the iPad’s runaway success. Tablet sales are expected to skyrocket 54 percent, to 107 million units this year, according to research firm IDC. In 2016, consumers will buy 221 million tablets, IDC said this week.

Tablets are stealing away laptops and computer owners and even beginning to win over some businesses. This year, PC sales are expected to rise just 5 percent, to 383 million units, compared with 10 percent growth the previous year.

Microsoft has struggled to keep an entrepreneurial edge given these sea changes in the computing world, experts say.

When Ballmer took over day-to-day operations from Bill Gates in 2000, he tried to thin out a bloated management structure. But engineers and marketing teams often worked in different buildings and traveled by shuttle bus across the vast Redmond, Wash., campus for meetings.

The move to develop its own hardware device also risks alienating key partners who have helped put the Windows software in the vast majority of households and businesses around the world.

“They have very little slack to make this new strategy relevant to everyone,” said Al Hilwa, an analyst at IDC. “Microsoft is trying to give you multiple access points to their ecosystem of content and apps, which is what Apple has done very well and Google is doing, too. It will be a race of giants.”

Ebook Sales Surpass Hardcover for First Time in U.S.

American publishers are now bringing in more revenue from ebooks than hardcover books, according to a report published by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

The figures, which were posted on GalleyCat on Friday, show that net sales revenue from ebooks exceeded that of hardcover books in the first quarter of the year: a first. The data was compiled from 1,189 publishers and did not include children’s books.

First Edition Design eBook Publishing

eBooks now outshine hardcover books.

Collectively, adult ebooks brought in $282.3 million in Q1. That’s an impressive 28.4% increase from the same period a year ago. Young adult and children’s ebooks performed even better, catapulting 233% to $64.3 million. Sales of adult hardcover books grew too, but more modestly, up 2.7% to $229.6 million in Q1 2012.

What’s driving the growth? The proliferation of ereading devices, from tablets and smartphones to dedicated ereaders, has a lot to do with it. Research published by Pew in April found a strong correlation between the spike in sales of ereading-capable devices and ebook adoption over the holidays.

Paperback sales continue to lead, bringing in $299.8 million in revenue in the first quarter of the year, but appear to be on the decline. (In fact, ebook sales surpassed paperback sales more than a year-and-a-half ago on Amazon.) Last year, net sales revenue for paperbacks amounted to $335 million.

Notably, downloadable audiobooks grew at an even greater rate than ebooks in that period, up 32.7% to $25 million in the first part of the year.First Edition Design eBook Publishing

How Twitter Can Improve Your Writing #FED_ebooks #Author #Writer #Indieauthor

First Edition Design Publishing

Ways Twitter Can Improve Our Writing

Founded in 2006, Twitter quickly became one of the defining marks of the current web generation. With so much emphasis put on social media and social networking in the last decade, Twitter filled an important void on the internet left by MySpace and Facebook. In all its simplicity and straightforwardness, Twitter has allowed individuals to plainly express their thoughts moment by moment to the mass public. Essentially like text messaging for the internet, Twitter mastered the key concept of simplicity and vanity that every social media master seeks today. But, with huge success comes, almost always, widespread criticism. Social media hubs like Facebook and Twitter have received a significant amount of flak from various parties online for various reasons. Many argue that Twitter inspires poorly written half-thoughts for the sole purpose of self-promotion and distraction. While this may be true of some Tweets and some Twitter users, there is much more to Twitter than these critics take the time to explore. There are several insightful and worthwhile writing lessons Twitter instills in the hundreds of millions of users who use it each day.

Encouraging Concise Writing

First Edition Design Publishing

Twitter trains writers to focus on sentence content

Clear, concise thoughts are a sign of strong and intelligent writing. Though the trend in academic writing today involves endless academic jargon, complex sentence structure, and longwinded thoughts, simple writing remains highly valued. Limited to only 140 characters, Twitter forces users to create sentences that get directly to the point as clearly and as quickly as possible. Writers can often get caught up in the construction of a sentence, losing sight of the true purpose of their writing. Twitter encourages people to focus on the point of their sentence rather than the structure, language, and length of that sentence. At some point in academic writing, length and vocabulary became the perceived measure of intelligence and quality. However, this is simply not the case. Clean and concise writing is valued above all else. Twitter teaches writers to craft sentences that are succinct and brief. With limited space to convey your message, you cut out the dribble and get straight to the point.

Practice in Editing

Editing and proofreading are two aspects of writing that the internet has seemingly hindered. Because the internet works at such a fast pace, much of the writing done online is messy and rushed. Skim through the average forum or Facebook page and you are sure to come across numerous misspellings, grammatical errors, and typos. However, editing is also an area that Twitter can remedy in many ways. Editing is one of the most essential tools and skills a writer can possess. Even the roughest of first drafts can be polished and perfected into a pristine piece after the right editing tweaks. Twitter is a great resource for learning to fine-tune your writing and narrow your arguments without sacrificing your unique style. Confining yourself to 140 characters helps you create sentences that are precise and pruned, while also remaining alluring and interesting.

Teaching People to Read Their Audience

The basic principle behind rhetoric is finding a way to create material that has an intended effect on an audience or reader. This is one of the most under-recognized skills that writers posses. Twitter is a wonderful tool for honing in on how you read and cater to an audience with your writing. When Tweeting, you must always be conscious of who your audience is and what they are looking for. Much of the writing that we do on social media and social networking hubs is very reader centric. We write and post things with the hope that they will be read. In this way, Twitter constantly takes into consideration what your readers want to see. While many may think this is some form of selling out, writing really is about both the writer and the reader. A writer must constantly keep their audience in mind. Often we shape our Tweets around what we think our audience wants to read and how they might interpret what we’ve written. This is great practice in persuasive rhetoric and an important writing lesson to master.

Self-publishing Fuels Print Book Growth #FED_ebooks #Author #Writer #Indieauthor

First Edition Design Publishing

Self-publishing fuels growth of print books

Once demeaned as vanity projects, homegrown books are behind the 6% growth last year in print titles.

The romance with the printed word shows no signs of abating. Despite the rapid growth in e-book sales in recent years, print book output in 2011 grew by 6%, to 347,178 titles, compared to the prior year.

First Edition Design Publishing Print On DemandThe preliminary numbers released Tuesday by bibliographic database Bowker are “the most significant expansion in more than four years” in the traditional publishing sector, the company said in its annual report on U.S. print book publishing. The uptick was driven entirely by self-published titles. Without them, the number of print titles would have been flat.

“Much as e-books have been the sexier topic over the past few years, most people still read print books,” noted Michael Norris, a senior analyst with publishing research firm Simba Information.

He added that the allure of print clearly extends to self-published titles. “If you talk to the given self-published author, some will admit they get a certain amount of pleasure from holding a physical book, signing it, and giving it as a gift—something that you just can’t do with e-books,” he said.

The universe of printed books is larger than those tracked by Bowker, which only counts books assigned an ISBN number, which identifies them for commercial purposes.

Bowker also has a separate count for titles it classifies as reprint/print on demand. Those titles are sold almost exclusively on the Web, and are put out mainly by publishing houses specializing in works that are in the public domain.

There were 1.1 million titles in that category in 2011, down 69% from the prior year. Reprint and print-on-demand has seen explosive growth in recent years, and the 2011 number was still up 15% over 2009, the report noted.

Among the categories tracked by Bowker, fiction remained No. 1, with 60,000 titles. Children’ literature, including young adult, was second with 36,000 titles.

Though the report does not track sales, Bowker noted that the landscape of publishing is changing.

“What was once relegated to the outskirts of our industry—and even took on demeaning names like ‘vanity press’—is now not only a viable alternative but what is driving the title growth of our industry today,” said Kelly Gallagher, vice president of Bowker Market Research, in a statement. “Self-publishing is a true legitimate power to be reckoned with. Coupled with the explosive growth of e-books and digital content, these two forces are moving the industry in dramatic ways.”

Pinterest Marketing Ideas from the Pros

Pinterest now counts 11.7 million unique users, and one BEA panel helped writers learn how to use the site for book promotion.

First Edition Design PublishingAt a BEA, KMS Public Relations president Kathleen Schmidt moderated a “Pin it on Pinterest: Driving Traffic to Your Brand” panel. The experts includedWall Street Journal pop culture reporter Katherine Rosman, Book Riot executive editor Bethanne Patrick and Book Riot community manager Rebecca Schinsky.

During the presentation, Rosman recalled how she met the founders of Pinterest when they were working out of a small Palo Alto apartment last August. Since those humble beginnings, this photo-sharing site has risen the ranks and become the third most popular social media platform in America.

We’ve collected some advice below–be sure to check out our Pinterest Tips for Writers post and our collection of Pinterest Boards for Book Lovers as well.

Pinterest Marketing Ideas for Writers

1. Pinterest works especially well to drive traffic to highly “visual” (image-driven) content. It doesn’t have the same impact on text-based content. When using this tool Schinsky advised, “take the idea of your book and make it visual.”

2. “Follow some big names on Pinterest and learn from them.” The panelists praised publishers Chronicle Books, Random House, and Scholastic for building incredible Pinterest boards.

3. Being succinct with your text usually garners a more favorable response. Keep descriptions to 200 words or less; “if you can describe your image in 7 words, do it in 7 words.”

4. Highlight a juicy quote from a book review and then use shareasimage.com to pin the text onto your Pinterest board; both the quote and the link source will show up.

5. “You don’t ever want to use your Pinterest board or any social media tools purely for promotional purposes.”

First Edition Design Publishing Received First Place Honors In Study of eBook and POD Publishers

World’s largest eBook distributor racked up highest marks in every category including customer satisfaction, royalty rates, technical ability, services and overall recommendation.

First Edition Design Publishing scored the highest in a comparative survey of ten top POD (Print On Demand) and eBook publishers. The independent study, using subjective and objective methods,  analyzed:  pricing, royalty pay-out rates, publisher’s websites, length of time in business, help available to authors, response time to inquiries, the ability to reach someone by phone, marketing services, customer base, turn-around time,  file submission requirements, range of distribution, and other areas.

“News of the report came to us during the week of Book Expo America in New York,” said Tom Gahan, Marketing Director  for First Edition Design Publishing. “The timing is curious. We’re not sure if the survey was done to coincide with Book Expo (America). Nonetheless, we’ve checked their findings. The facts are  spot on.”

The study, posted on-line at www.publisherrank.com , was researched and compiled by the PMG Associates, an independent research firm.

First Edition Design Publishing’s CEO, Deborah E. Gordon said in response to the news of the publisherrank.com  study, “To provide our clients with the best service possible. To offer choices, listen to our client’s needs, and offer solutions that work–that is the principle the company was founded on and it is something we take very seriously. I believe that is what keeps us at the forefront of the game. I am very proud to say that our entire organization takes those words to heart and acts upon them accordingly.”
