Remember when your high school summer reading list included AtticusFiesta, and The Last Man in Europe? You will once you see what these books were renamed before they hit bookshelves.

If he hadn’t arrived at that title, high school kids would be pondering the themes of Trimalchio in West Egg; Among Ash-Heaps and Millionaires; On the Road to West Egg; Under the Red, White, and Blue; Gold-Hatted Gatsby; and The High-Bouncing Lover.

2. George Orwell’s publisher didn’t feel the title to Orwell’s novel The Last Man in Europe was terribly commercial and recommended using the other title he had been kicking around—1984.

3. Before it was Atlas Shrugged, it was The Strike, which is how Ayn Rand referred to her magnum opus for quite some time. In 1956, a year before the book was released, she decided the title gave away too much plot detail. Her husband suggested Atlas Shrugged and it stuck.

4. The title of Bram Stoker’s famous Gothic novel sounded more like a spoof before he landed on Dracula—one of the names Stoker considered was The Dead Un-Dead.

5. Ernest Hemingway’s original title for The Sun Also Rises was used for foreign-language editions—Fiesta. He changed the American English version to The Sun Also Rises at the behest of his publisher.

6. It’s because of Frank Sinatra that we use the phrase “Catch-22” today. Well, sort of. Author Joseph Heller tried out Catch-11, but because the original Ocean’s Eleven movie was newly in theaters, it was scrapped to avoid confusion. He also wanted Catch-18, but, again, a recent publication made him switch titles to avoid confusion: Leon Uris’ Mila 18. The number 22 was finally chosen because it was 11 doubled.

7. To Kill a Mockingbird was simply Atticus before Harper Lee decided the title focused too narrowly on one character.

8. An apt precursor to the Pride and Prejudice title Jane Austen finally decided on: First Impressions.

9. Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow? Secretly, apparently. Mistress Mary, taken from the classic nursery rhyme, was the working title for Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden.

10. Originally called Ulysses in Dublin, James Joyce’s Dubliners featured characters that would later appear in his epic Ulysses a few years later.

Question: When a person is in a horrible situation, faith is wonderful. Tell me about the role of free will and small steps toward a solution, or at least, easing the burden.

Answer: First of all, these two – faith and free will – are not in opposing camps. Both are intrinsically linked because faith is a choice. Whether that choice is to believe in ourselves, in someone we trust or in God, when we talk about choices we are invariably saying that we are not coerced, but are making the decision of our own free will. As a matter of fact, the Bible says in Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will eat with him, and he with me.”

Digital book piracy is a major problem facing some 21st Century authors. At the same time, many publishers and authors don’t have the financial resources to hire a legal service to fight piracy. For all the authors, publishers and readers who want to defend digital books against piracy, we’ve put together a simple five-step plan to discover and prevent eBook piracy.

1. Start a daily Google Alert for your name and the name of your book. If your book is being indexed on a pirate website, the Google alert will pick up most mentions of your name or the book’s name.  eBook piracy

2. Search the most popular file sharing sites. We won’t list them here, but you need to search for your book in all the popular pirate haunts.

3. Send a DMCA take-down notice. You need to send this Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) form letter to every single site hosting a pirated copy of your book. If you visit the file-sharing site’s main page, you should be able to find a “DMCA Policy” and email address. Save this form letter.

4. Save a list of all the sites where you discovered pirated copies and keep checking them. Sometimes pirates will repost the book at a later time or use a file mirroring service to keep the link alive. You will need to send the letter again.

5. Send a list of all the infringing sites to your publisher. Many publishers are also fighting these sites and can help you in this process.  (Photo via fdecomite)

Where Wal-Mart departs, a library succeeds

A vast building in McAllen, Texas, was once home to a Wal-Mart — but no longer. When the discount superstore moved to a larger location, it left behind a vast empty building. The community took advantage of the space and converted the warehouse-like building into a public library.

The size of more than two football fields, the McAllen Public Library is the largest single-story library in the country, the website PSFK writes. Its conversion from vast warehouse space to functioning library has recently made it the winner of the 2012 Library Interior Design Competition by the International Interior Design Assn.

Adriana Ramirez, who teaches creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh, grew up in McAllen. “The old library on Main Street was not beautiful,” she told Jacket Copy. “It was packed with books and seemed too small for the people it serviced. Of course, that was part of the charm — always waiting your turn for the computer and spending a good amount of time finding a corner where you could read uninterrupted. The new library solves all that.”

McAllen is near the southernmost tip of Texas, on the Mexico border. “In a city like McAllen, with cartel violence across the river (less than 10 miles away from the library), I think it’s amazing that the city is devoting resources to a) not only saving a large and conspicuous piece of property from decline and vandalism, but b) diverting those resources into youth and the public trust,” Ramirez writes. “It’s easy to fall into drugs, drinking, and violence when you live on the border. It’s not really easy to find a place to hang out when you’re 14 that’s not the mall, the movies, or Mexico. And a giant library — a cool-looking open space devoted to entertaining the imagination? Well, I think that’s the best counter-move against violence imaginable. And you don’t even have to wait for a computer now.”

The new McAllen Public Library opened in December 2011; after it had been open for just a month, new user registration increased by 23%.

Nigeria: Can E-Books Replace Paper Books?

Up to 43 per cent of Nigerians would prefer to read electronic books (e-books), a Daily Trust online poll shows, though the larger percentage still prefer to read a “normal” book.

The poll asked which kind of books readers preferred, between print books and e-books. A little more than 57 per cent of the 1,579 visitors who participated in the poll chose normal books, leaving 43 per cent who preferred e-books.

The figure shows some awareness about the latest book technology sweeping through the world of publishing.

Data from 250 publishers around the world show sales of consumer e-books increase by 366 per cent last year, according to the Publishers Association.

Last year alone, e-book sales became equivalent to 6 per cent of consumer physical book sales by value, it highlighted in its report.

“The beauty of e-books is that they are so versatile, you can read on your phone, computer or several brands of e-readers. You can also send them digitally to any part of the world,” says Myne Whitman, author of Heart to Mend and Rekindled. Both works of the Nigerian writer based in Seattle, USA, have been stocked on major online ebook retail stores.

“Currently, almost 50,000 copies of all my ebooks combined has been downloaded. That is five times more than the paperback copies,” she told Daily Trust.

“Most of the fan mail I have received have been from those who read the e-versions of my books, maybe because these people spend more time on the internet.”

The admission is telling for several reasons. Zubairu Atta, a consultant on book strategy and member of Abuja Literary Society estimates awareness may reach 60% of Nigeria – and “is still catching on particularly because the concept of payment is still an issue.”

“A lot of people are still not very conversant with using their ATM card and those who have credit cards are not sure about it.”

The basic infrastructure needed for an e-book market to take off is still flagging, and Atta says the “Nigerian market is before creation –it hasn’t been born properly.”

Novelist Netty Ejike says many people she has come across know little or nothing about ebooks.

“That is not alarming. To be interested in ebooks means you have your own personal computer, or at least you have one you can have instant access to,” says the author of Obsession, His Sin, Stormy Affair, An Impious Proposal.

“Talking about e-book readers is going a bit too far,” she adds. Highend stores in Abuja stock the latest models of tablet computers and phones, but none has an e-reader on offer.

It doesn’t mean Nigerians don’t use e-books. Recent research has found a growing number of undergraduate and postgraduate students read e-books.

Publishers offer academic textbook in digital formats in addition to hardcopy. And it is quite easy to download digital copies of textbooks in computing, engineering and statistics than wait to pick up one in the post. The problem is paying for it.

A survey of e-book use at the University of Ibadan in which 750 people participated found no respondent paid for their electronic textbooks. They got them as free downloads from websites offering free e-books or borrowed from friends who in turn got the e-books as free downloads.

Online stores selling normal books in Nigeria depend on banks to get their money. Not many buyers would want to run for a bank teller to buy a N400 novel. An online credit system is desired but must overcome scepticism that dogs anything digital in Nigeria.

Atta reads e-books but, “buying them online is too cumbersome,” he says. He points to elaborate scams in which download pages freeze up and links to download e-books automatically disappear once payment is confirmed in online transaction.

Those who have read e-books love the feel of technology but it is just “not the same satisfaction,” he says, admitting he is old fashioned.

“Despite that, I have a lot of experience reading both e-books and paper copies. I find more satisfaction and trust in reading paper copies, because it is in my hand.”

E-books require power to a computer or laptop and electricity remains serious problems, not to mention internet access to download them. Additionally, there are the children to consider.

“I am very scared of having them read e-books on computers. Before you know it sometimes they stray onto the internet and get things that destroy their attention. If you take them, give them a paper book for an hour a day, you see that they benefit more — are more disciplined, more focused,” says Atta.

Netty is still looking to have her titles carried on Debonair when the online store begins carrying electronic books. Maybe sales could reach massive ratios of 500 e-books to 1 print copy, she hopes.

“On the other hand, paperbacks are still very much in vogue in Nigeria (for the few who are still avid readers), and until the awareness of e-books is well established, they will continue to outsell the digital format.”

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.
