Even Toys”R”Us Has a Tablet Now

Toys”R”Us has taken a good long look at the increasingly crowded Android tablet market and decided it wants a minuscule sliver too. So starting October 1st, every child’s favorite store will start selling a seven-inch, $150 Android device called the Tabeo targeted at younger users.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market But what makes the tablet kid-friendly? Besides a custom UI that keeps Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich stripped to the bare necessities, the Tabeo comes pre-installed with 50 different apps that cover everything from games, to educational titles, to ebooks. And its custom app store is promised to offer some 7,000 additional titles, including favorites like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. There are also plenty of parental controls in the 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor-powered tablet, including the ability to remotely lock down or limit the device from a browser, for those times when your young’n locks themselves in their room.

At the moment Toys”R”Us’ online store shows the Tabeo available for pre-order with a ship date of October 1st, but the official press release indicates it won’t be hitting brick and mortar store shelves until the 21st. With competitors like the MEEP!, Vinci, and LeapPad already targeting kids, this is certainly a sector that might be over-served already. But who knows, maybe Toys”R”Us has managed to build a $150 Android Tablet that’s a lesson in something more than abject frustration.

Kobo Announces A New Android Tablet To Take On Amazon

Would anybody be so bold to announce a new line of eReaders and Android tablets the same day as Amazon’s big press event? The Kindle Fire HD and Paperwhite are immediately impressive, but is there an alternative? Kobo thinks they have just the thing.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market

Kobo Glo

Kobo announced today that they will be bringing four new devices to market this year. Three of the devices are updates to their eReader line while the other is an entirely new direction for the company – a 7-inch Android tablet. Kobo’s eReaders are currently in the hands of more than 10 million people around the world, but they obviously want to expand that.

Taking on the Paperwhite and the Nook is the Kobo Glo. It uses what they call ComfortLight technology to provide a superior reading experience. In reality, it uses the same frontlit screen technology that the Kindle Paperwhite and Nook use to replicate a realistic reading experience. The device will be available on October 1 for $129.99. For comparison, the Wi-Fi Paperwhite will only be $119.

Kobo is also taking on the original Kindle with the Kobo Mini. The 5-inch tablet is reportedly the smallest and lightest eReader on the market. It uses the same E Ink screen that other eReaders feature but offers the convenience of being able to fit inside a pocket. It will hold up to 1,000 eBooks. The Kobo Mini will retail for $79.99 on October 1.

The Kobo Touch is already available, but the company decided to give it a price cut to remain competitive. The eReader is now only $99.99. It features new software that Kobo says will help readers “personalize the reading experience, get recommendations and discover new content.”

The major announcement from Kobo today, however, comes in the form of the Kobo Arc. It’s a 7-inch Android tablet that runs on a customized version of Ice Cream Sandwich. The UI is called Tapestries and it pins content on the homepage to recommend new content to users. One major advantage of the Kobo Arc is that it’s able to access the Google Play store for even more apps than what Amazon offers on their store. The Kobo Arc launches in November in two flavors – 8GB for $199.99 and 16GB for $249.99.

While it lacks the killer presentation that Amazon put on, Kobo has a decent line up of devices for the holiday season. They cost more than Amazon’s offerings, but the Kobo brand has its loyal fans. They’re sure to eat up these new products, and they just might get some new fans this year as well.

Why I chose to self-publish #FED_ebooks #indieauthor #author #ebook

Why I chose to self-publish

Guest Blog by Geoff Veit

It isn’t hard for me to explain why I chose to self-published my first book. I think my reason is common, but certainly not the only reason. When I have asked other writers why they self-published, their answers are usually one of these or the same reason I have.

  • It is faster. I wanted to get this information out as soon as possible.
  • It’s the way of the future. Self-publishing is the new platform.
  • My book has a unique or narrow reader base. It is easier to target that base.
  • I don’t have the time to send out query letters and find an agent.

And there are probably a few others that I don’t remember. As you can see, in most cases, it had to do with a timing and effort issue. I agree that it takes time to write letters not to mention the expenses involved for mail or for copy materials. If you work a full time job then your time is a legitimate issue.

Fott’s Journey by Geoff Veit published  in eBook by First Edition Design Publishing

The reason I published electronically the first time is, in a single word, discouraged. I was discouraged about the conventional route. I wrote the query letters, I emailed, I called, I tried to get a foot in the agent’s door, any way I could. After struggling with that issue for a few months, I tried contacting the publishers directly. I had the same result approaching publishers that I had trying to find an agent. Dead ends, No person actually read my book and said “I don’t like it, no thanks” or “You need to clean it up.” They never asked about my other writings or tried to find out who I was or what might be the opportunity in my future writings. Nothing, no comments at all except an occasional letter explaining that the agent or publisher wasn’t accepting anything new.

I was past discouraged and in fact I almost let the discouragement stop me from doing what I love. The lack of publisher interest left me feeling like a failure. I didn’t realize there was an alternative until one Christmas morning, about 6 years ago. I was given a Kindle and that got me thinking about electronic books and from there I thought about self-publishing and a short time after that, I self-published my first book. All the things that I had let hold me back, were gone. I wasn’t discouraged any more. Sure, there was still a lot to do but now I had control of what to do and when.

What are your thoughts about self-publishing?  Enter a comment below.

Every Time You Torrent, Feds Log Your IP in Just Three Hours

Anyone who has downloaded pirated music, video or ebooks using a BitTorrent client has probably had their IP address logged by copyright-enforcement authorities within three hours of doing so. So say computer scientists who placed a fake pirate server online—and very quickly found monitoring systems checking out who was taking what from the servers.

The news comes from this week’s SecureComm conference in Padua, Italy, where computer security researcher Tom Chothia and his colleagues at the University of Birmingham, UK, revealed they have discovered “massive monitoring” of BitTorrent download sites, such as the PirateBay, has been taking place for at least three years.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market BitTorrent is a data distribution protocol that splits an uploaded digital media file into many parts and shares it around a swarm of co-operating servers. Birmingham’s fake server acted like a part of a file-sharing swarm and the connections made to it quickly revealed the presence of file-sharing monitors run by “copyright enforcement organisations, security companies and even government research labs”.

“We only detected monitors in Top 100 torrents; this implies that copyright enforcement agencies are monitoring only the most popular content music and movie on public trackers,” the team says in its presentation paper. “Almost everyone that shares popular films and music illegally will be connected to by a monitor and will have their IP address logged,” says Chothia.

Given the vast numbers of people whose IP addresses will have now been logged, the finding raises the question over what enforcement outfits now plan to do with their harvested data. Have they gathered a war chest of targets for future copyright infringement lawsuits? Or are they simply assessing the scale of the problem to make governments act?

If it is for lawsuits, the standard of evidence may not be enough, says Chothia. “All the monitors connected to file sharers believed to be sharing illegal content. However, they did not actually collect any of the files being shared. So it is questionable whether the observed evidence of file-sharing would stand up in court.”

Poe’s Ten Saddest Moments #FED_ebooks #writer #author

First Edition Design Publishing

Having a bad day? Check out the top ten miseries of Edgar Allen Poe.

Poe’s Ten Saddest Moments

Edgar Allen Poe was a living tragedy. And his work – in all its brutal, incarnadine-motifed morbidity – reflected that fact. For every poem about a dead young lover or gravestone polished by a widower’s tears, there is a horrible justified sadness lurking just at the other end of the quill, cursing unjust fate. Poe’s life was a string of unfortunate events, which may have inspired some of his greatest gothic/romantic/anti-transcendental writings. So while we owe a debt of gratitude to his brilliantly impassioned body of work, we must also keep in mind what torture was endured to make his pages truly bleed and moan. Here are ten of the saddest moments in Edgar Allen Poe’s life:

10 Orphan

 Edgar Allan Poe Sm

Straight out the gate, Edgar Allen Poe had it rough, as if he were literally born into misfortune. Born in 1809 (the middle child of three), his birth parents, Elizabeth and David Poe were both actors. In 1810, his father abandoned the family. In 1811, his mother died of consumption, also known as pulmonary tuberculosis; Poe was effectively orphaned. Little did he know, this would be the start of a cruel sort of tradition in his life.

9 Under-Supported

 Poe

While Poe was living with the Allens, patriarch of the family John Allen – a well-off Scottish merchant – neglected Poe in all sorts of ways, emotionally and fiscally. Poe was never even formally adopted. Meanwhile, Poe’s foster brother was spoiled fat in plain sight. When Poe finally went off to school, his foster father didn’t give him enough money or supplies, and soon Poe resorted to gambling. Also, Allen had received a large inheritance from his deceased uncle, zero of which Poe benefited from. While Allen did send some money and clothes after Poe pleaded via a series of desperate letters, there was still a surmounting debt in Poe’s name (not to mention a lack of the basic wherewithal to get by). Thus, Poe was forced to join the military to make ends meet. He did, all the while, continue to write here and there and for various publications and newspapers. But ultimately, and far too often, he did find himself the quintessence of a starving writer.

8 First Love Marries Another

  Sara Elmira Royster

Before Poe went to school, he became smitten with a girl named Sarah Elmira Royster, but when he went off to study at the University of Virginia, she – with the prodding of her meddling father (who destroyed all of Poe’s letters to her) – married a wealthy man who could provide her a future, of which Poe seemed incapable. They had two children (and lost two more at birth), but in 1844 he died, leaving the family an estate worth $100,000, on the condition that she didn’t remarry. She and Poe did become engaged again later on, to the reluctance of her children, and the two never ended up tying the knot prior to Poe’s death.

7  Foster Mother Died

 F4694349B8

During a time when Poe was enduring strict radio silence from his foster father – who had been ignoring his letters – Poe’s foster mother Frances Allen had become ill and died in 1829. Poe had received no news of this fact, nor of the burial arrangements, as he learned the fact the day after when he came to visit. At this point, Poe was devoid of all mother figures, not to mention a proper father figure.

6 Disowned by Foster Family

 7D94A4126B

John Allen eventually remarried, and continued to be an asshole to Poe. When his wife discovered Allen had children out of affairs, the conflict led to the disowning of Poe, who was never actually legally adopted to begin with. One last middle finger: when Allen eventually died, the inheritance money went to his illegitimate children, not a dime left to Poe.

5 Brother Died of Alcoholism

 Poebysartain

After Poe was disowned, he sought a home once more, and found it with his natural aunt, cousin, and older brother Henry. Henry, unfortunately, had a drinking problem (as did Poe, who lost a number of jobs over it), and ended up dying from it in 1831. After this, Poe tried to clean up his act and start writing with intent.

4 First Wife Died of Tuberculosis

G225610 U75009 Thomas Sully Virginia Clemm Poe

While staying with his relatives, Poe fell in love with his 13 year-old cousin Virginia Clemm. In Baltimore, they married in secret, and they lied about her age on the marriage certificate (alleging she was 21). Poe, at the time, was 26. Eventually they did have a public ceremony, after Poe found some literary success. But one day while she was singing and playing piano, she coughed up blood, which was a symptom of tuberculosis, or the Red Death, which Poe felt to be a tangible pursuer. After her death on January 30, 1847, he never really recovered from his depression, which he drowned in alcohol, despair, and late night visits to her frozen-over grave site.

3 Failed Romances

Detail 1869 By John Nelson Arnold Sarah Helen Whitman (1803-1878) Brown Portrait Collection, Brown University Providence, Ri

With the loss of Virginia and virtually every good female presence in his life, he had a void in need of filling (one which alcohol couldn’t effectively satiate). He became engaged to poet Sarah Helen Whitman, which ultimately ended due to Poe’s drinking (with some help from Whitman’s disapproving mother). After that didn’t work out, he looked his ex-fiancée Sarah Elmira Royster up in Baltimore, who was widowed at the time, and planned to marry her. Fate had other plans…

2 Poe Died of Mysterious Causes

Images-14

The cause of Poe’s death is uncertain, and death certificates no longer exist, but there has been wild speculation over the years, including: rabies, syphilis, epilepsy, and brain swelling related to alcoholism. He was found in Baltimore, deranged and disoriented (and not in his original clothing), and was taken to a hospital by a man who found him in the streets. His last word were said to have been, though he hardly lucid in the hours prior to his demise, “Lord help my poor soul.” His last cry for help in a life cloaked in utter tragedy.

1  Defamed by Literary Rival

 03A17Cfa75

As if his death and life-long suffering weren’t enough, his literary rival Rufus Griswold – who had an axe to grind ever since Poe wrote some bad criticisms about him – decided to sully his name after death. Penning Poe’s obituary and first biography, and filling them with lies and all sorts of disinformation – like that Poe was a drunk and a drug addict and a womanizer and had no friends or morals (using Poe’s own personal letters against him) – Griswold was dismissed by Poe’s friends who knew better. Griswold’s efforts backfired as his biography actually helped sell Poe’s work, and Griswold is known only today as a petty grudge-bearer and for being Poe’s first biographer and obituary writer (however inaccurate). So this story – that of Poe’s life, that is – begins incredibly sad and ends slightly happy, one minor victory bookending a thoroughly defeated life.

Five reasons why self-publishing beats traditional publishing #FED_ebooks #Writer #Author

Five reasons why self-publishing beats traditional publishing

Guest Blog by Yvonne Capitelli

Someone recently asked me why I self-published. The truth is, when I finally decided the time was right to make my lifelong dream of writing children’s books a reality, it never occurred to me to start searching for a traditional publisher. I literally dove in! When my manuscript was complete, I searched the internet and library reading everything I could find on how to self-publish. I took one small step at a time and before long I was holding my dream in my hands. I think it’s because when I was young my parents instilled in me that I could be and do anything I put my mind to. There is always a way to figure things out if you are determined and persevere. I apply this concept to everything I’ve ever accomplished. Since my first book, I’ve experienced self-publishing and traditional publishing and I strongly encourage you to take the plunge and self-publish.

  • You have complete creative freedom. After all, it is your baby. Why not write the story you’ve always imagined, choose the illustrator, the title and cover. A word of advice… pay attention to all the little details. Make sure your book and media has a professional presentation: terrific cover, expert editing, formatting, spine detail, website, blog, publishing logo, advertising material, etc..

  • Some writers spend years searching for a publisher without success. Funds permitting, you can self-publish within months. EBook and Print On Demand self-publishing takes less than a week, it is extremely inexpensive and you can have worldwide distribution in a few weeks. (Worldwide exposure for less than what it would cost to print up advertising post cards and mail them. That’s incredible!)

  • You will make more money (royalties) and receive a much higher percentage from sales. Instead of 6% from a traditional publisher, if you self-print, you could receive as much as 75% when you want copies of your book. (Ed. note: POD (Print On Demand) also offers authors much higher returns than traditional publishing).

  • You don’t have to wait; you can publish your book now. You are the publisher and the author and since you’re wearing both hats, you’re in complete control over when, where and how. You will acquire an understanding of marketing and get feedback directly from your readers. You can always decide in the future to have a traditional publisher take over the printing and sales of your book. Your success of being a published author is up to you. An informative book that will help any indie author is 1001 Ways to Market Your Books by John Kremer.

  • Most importantly you hold all the rights to your book and have complete freedom over all aspects of your dream.

Students stock up on iPads, ebooks

TRIPS TO OFFICEMAX to fill up on pencils, filler paper, binders, and notebooks for the first day of school could soon go the way of the horse and buggy, replaced by trips to the Apple store to pick up iPads and iPad Apps.

Apple’s iPad replaces textbooks

This September, BC High’s seventh through tenth graders will be required to obtain iPads as part of their school supply list. They join schools like Burlington High School and Sacred Heart High School in Kingston that have purchased iPads for their entire student body with the goal of cutting textbook costs and taking advantage of a wide variety of digital learning resources.

At BC High, a private school in Dorchester where students must pay for their own textbooks, administrators expect the iPads to pay for themselves in cost-savings from buying ebooks instead of regular textbooks.     Charlie Drane, the BC High Academic Vice Principal, said many textbooks can cost between $100 and $200 each, but the e-versions of those books are priced significantly lower. “In one class alone, it’s a $100 savings,” Drane said.

Drane estimated that “potentially in two years, but certainly in three years,” students will recoup the cost of their $399 iPad in textbook savings.

Not only do the e-books cost less, Drane said, but they come with more features to aid learning than the regular books do.

Although the iPads are primarily for textbooks, teachers at BC High, who have already been equipped with their own iPads by the school, plan to use them for other activities. “There will be many different uses for it both in the classroom and out of the classroom, on top of the textbook replacement,” Drane said.

The iPads can save paper, allowing students to turn in their assignments to their teachers in digital form. Their teachers can grade them electronically and even record their comments for the student in audio form.

The idea for using iPads at BC High first surfaced in 2010, when the school’s director of technology got an iPad. He saw the potential for its use in the classroom, and last year the school purchased iPads for every member of the BC High faculty. Drane said letting the faculty use the iPads for a year gave them a sense of their value in the classroom. When it came time to decide whether to make iPads a part of the curriculum, the faculty was in full support. “It was very clear where everyone stood,” Drane said.

The school decided they would require students to purchase the iPads on their own rather than the school buying them, in part to allow students to consider the device their own. So far, reaction from students has been overwhelmingly positive but parents are a little more hesitant, Drane said.

The biggest issues that parents are concerned about are safety and security. A significant chunk of BC High students use public transportation to get to school, and parents are worried their sons’ iPads will be stolen or lost. Other parents are concerned their sons will access websites they shouldn’t go on to, or that their sons already spend too much time connected to technology.

The school intends to bring in a Massachusetts State Police officer to school early in the year to talk to students about iPad safety. The school is also encouraging students to purchase insurance for their iPads to address the issue of theft or breakage. The school also sees the iPads as a great opportunity to educate students about the resources available to them through technology, while also showing them how to be responsible on the web.

Ryan Bernardi, who is from Milton and is entering the tenth grade at BC High this year, said he is in favor of the iPads but thinks it may take some getting used to if teachers are asking students to use the device as a replacement for a notebook in class.

“I think one challenge will be to take notes,” Bernardi said.

Bernardi, who already had an iPad and had used it in some classes last year where teachers permitted them, is already seeing significant savings from textbook purchases. As for concerns about loss or breakage, Bernardi said he keeps it safely in his backpack when traveling to and from school on the Red Line. “I always check to make sure I have it,” he said.

He also pointed out that the Apple store sells cases to prevent the iPad from breaking if it is dropped.

A Writing Exercise #FED_ebooks #Writer

A Writing Exercise

Guest Blog by Jamie Sutliff

In a single sentence, create a story idea with a beginning, middle and end. Examples:

Beginning – John goes to the bakery on the corner and encounters a friend from high school.

Middle – They have a conversation and reminisce the past.

End – Dramatic- She is the fatal instinct type and decides to kill him – or – he harbors old grudges and decides to kill her.

Romantic – they find in only a few short minutes that they were meant for each other, decide to divorce their present spouses and run away to join a circus or be the first couple married on the moon.

1. Invent your characters in one sentence as John walks to the bakery. He was overweight, short and balding but lovable like a bathtub squeaky toy.

He was tall, athletic and worked out – he’s going to the bakery to buy spinach blintzes damn it!

He is a professor of English Lit at Vassar and buys croissants for his ten-dollar latte.

2. Invent the dialogue. They argue over insults from the past.

She is witty and urbane – he is surly and dull or vise-versa.

They talk of good times from the past, smile and laugh a lot.

They discuss people they hated from the past and decide to become serial killers and take out the entire class.

3. Action/dialogue. Dialogue can be action if the descriptive narrative punches up the story.

Her sleepy green eyes found his through the candlelight as her dark auburn hair swirled over her bare shoulders when she turned her head. She purred, “I think we should disembowel them with a rusty can opener.”

His deep throaty laugh whispered an odor of mint julep. “I love it when you get kinky.”

Never forget that a sense of humor even with the darkest plots will catch the reader’s attention. Try to describe your characters in short punchy dialogue scenes. This will set your readers up for movie-type sequencing. Keep the reader glued to short beautiful narratives: From my story “Yah-Ko,” based on Native American shape-shifters:

“As if the mountain’s peak had pierced the sun, the glow spilled out like warm honey in golden ribbons over the lakes in the deep valleys. The osprey appeared as a silhouette against the sunset, a perfect curve in the wingtips teased the wind for more lift.”

I want you to write a short story under 1000 words using the formula above. I find short stories much easier to write and my novels are all based on short stories. It is great fun to open a finished short story and expand it to your heart’s delight – it can begin as a quick salad good for your brain and become a gourmet literary meal with seven courses of satisfying reading.
