Anyone who has downloaded pirated music, video or ebooks using a BitTorrent client has probably had their IP address logged by copyright-enforcement authorities within three hours of doing so. So say computer scientists who placed a fake pirate server online—and very quickly found monitoring systems checking out who was taking what from the servers.

The news comes from this week’s SecureComm conference in Padua, Italy, where computer security researcher Tom Chothia and his colleagues at the University of Birmingham, UK, revealed they have discovered “massive monitoring” of BitTorrent download sites, such as the PirateBay, has been taking place for at least three years.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market BitTorrent is a data distribution protocol that splits an uploaded digital media file into many parts and shares it around a swarm of co-operating servers. Birmingham’s fake server acted like a part of a file-sharing swarm and the connections made to it quickly revealed the presence of file-sharing monitors run by “copyright enforcement organisations, security companies and even government research labs”.

“We only detected monitors in Top 100 torrents; this implies that copyright enforcement agencies are monitoring only the most popular content music and movie on public trackers,” the team says in its presentation paper. “Almost everyone that shares popular films and music illegally will be connected to by a monitor and will have their IP address logged,” says Chothia.

Given the vast numbers of people whose IP addresses will have now been logged, the finding raises the question over what enforcement outfits now plan to do with their harvested data. Have they gathered a war chest of targets for future copyright infringement lawsuits? Or are they simply assessing the scale of the problem to make governments act?

If it is for lawsuits, the standard of evidence may not be enough, says Chothia. “All the monitors connected to file sharers believed to be sharing illegal content. However, they did not actually collect any of the files being shared. So it is questionable whether the observed evidence of file-sharing would stand up in court.”

Christian eBooks Surge #FED_ebooks #ebook #Christian #indieauthor

Christian Fiction Undergoing a Resurgence via eReaders

Christian fiction and religious ebooks are undergoing a quiet resurgence due to the widespread availability of electronic book readers. Though erotica sales have dominated the digital and tangible industries this year, Christian books seem be generating more and more consistent sales.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market Christian ebook book American Association of Publishers Religious and Christian Fiction industry publisherEbook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market According to the American Association of Publishers, Christian content is doing quite well. Revenue growth increased by 7% in 2011, which generated almost $1.45 billion — driven largely by sales of e-books. Meanwhile, a separate study dived into the semantics of ebooks. It found that digital content accounted for nearly one-third of all Christian fiction sold in 2011. Bold numbers, but really quite telling because the genre had increased by almost six times from 2010.

Erotica and Christian fiction are strange bedfellows and normally do not have anything in common at all. One of the similarities is the privacy and anonymity factors that drive digital sales and provide a virtual security blanket. When you read ebooks in public, no one knows what type of book you are engaged in. There is no book jacket or cover art that proclaims to the world what you are doing. Digital books remove the embarrassment factor of guilty pleasures or personal choices in reading.

Patchen Barrs, author of The Erotic Engine provided further insight on why erotica and Christian fiction are doing so well in today’s digital climate. “Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James and religious ones like Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo are achieving similar success in the ebook market. Besides death, there are two experiences universal in the human condition: sex and faith. As far back as the 14th Century households had to be wealthy to afford a single book. Often that manuscript was a prayer book with erotic pictures in the margins. They served both body and soul.”

The entire Christian fiction and non-fiction industries are changing up their business model and appealing to a new customer, the technology savvy. The Family Christian line of stores in the USA has just released a new tablet that is exclusively geared towards the family and the Christian faith. Many companies have issued Android Apps, such as YouVersion Bible. It currently has over 554,388 reviews and 50,000,000 downloads since it launched.

The Religious and Christian Fiction industry, as a whole, has grown by leaps and bounds since 2009. This year will be a record year of growth due to the sheer amount of stores that deliver digital content. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords,  and Kobo deliver eBooks on a wider footprint then ever before. For the first time many customers in Canada, UK,  Denmark,  Netherlands and Japan are enjoying unparallelled access to quality content. Competing eBook stores also do a better job at marketing then the actual publisher does. It is easier than ever before to buy books while on the go via WIFI and not have to advertise to the world the essence of your faith, unless you want to.

For first time eBooks pass print in adult fiction #FED_ebooks #ebooks #author #fiction #writer

Ebooks pass print in adult fiction for first time

Last year sales of books on Kindles, Nooks, iPads and smartphones passed printed book sales in the closely watched adult fiction category.

While ebooks have not yet surpassed print in total adult trade book sales, they did rule over all the other subcategories including hardcover fiction as well as the lower-priced mass market fiction and the higher-priced quality fiction known as trade paperbacks, according to the latest numbers being released today by BookStats.

The numbers are co-produced by the Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group.

There were 388 million ebooks sold last year, the survey revealed. That’s a 210 percent jump from the 125 million ebooks sold in 2010. On the revenue side, ebook sales more than doubled, to $2.074 billion in 2011, from $869 million in 2010.

First Edition Design Publishing is the world’s largest eBook and POD (Print On Demand) distributor. The company also has a POD division, which creates printed books and makes them available worldwide through their distribution network. The company is a licensed and approved Aggregator and holds licenses with both Apple and Microsoft. www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.comThe AAP did not release specific titles, but the ebooks counted such hits as “Unbroken,” by Laura Hillenbrand, as the top seller.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” by the late Stieg Larsson, was No. 2, according to some reports.

“While ebooks showed increasing strength, the combined print formats still represented the majority of publishers’ net revenues in the trade sector at $11.1 billion for 2011,” AAP spokeswoman Andi Sporkin said.

That’s because a printed book costs more than its digital cousin.

Asked when ebooks might emerge as the undisputed sales leader — with more than 50 percent of the revenue — Sporkin said, “That won’t happen for a while yet.”

In the adult fiction category, ebooks now represent 30 percent of net revenue.

When other aspects of the trade category are included, such as titles targeted at children and young adults, ebook growth is less spectacular — at just 15 percent of revenue and units sold.

The trade category is the term for books aimed at general interest consumers.

The ebook surge was not enough to offset a decline in total revenues in the overall book market, which encompasses the commercial, entertainment, educational, professional and scholarly sectors.

Overall book publishing revenue declined 2.5 percent in 2011, according to the report, to $27.2 billion.

The total number of units sold actually rose 3.4 percent to 2.77 billion books, up from 2.68 billion a year earlier.

The Borders bankruptcy in 2011, which saw more than 500 retail outlets shuttered, appears to have hurt book sales through brick-and-mortar retail outlets — where sales tumbled 12.6 percent to $8.59 billion.

Despite the decline, brick-and-mortar retail still ranked as the No. 1 sales channel in 2011.

Online retail sales grew 35 percent in 2011, to $5.04 billion, representing 18 percent of total books sold.

Bright spots — aside from the surge in ebooks, included the children’s/young adult category, which saw a 12 percent increase — to $2.78 billion, which was the largest jump of any subcategory.

In addition, the publishers’ sales picture was improved in large part by blockbusters like “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins.

UK survey finds almost half of parents read to kids via e-reader

Juvenile ebook sales up 233%

(NEWSER) – Kids aren’t exactly picking a book off the shelf before snuggling under the covers these days. SmartMoney reports on the trend by way of the UK, where a survey found that almost a full half of parents say they now read to their kids via e-reader or tablet (or hand the device to their kids so they can do their own reading). The stats exist to back it up: Revenue in the juvenile e-books category (that’s books for those under 18) exploded 233% in Q1 to $64 million. “It’s the fastest growing category in trade,” says an Association of American Publishers rep.

The wee ones may be be leading the charge: A US survey of tweens and teenagers found that the over-13 crowd still tends to prefer paper books, but those between 7 and 12 consider e-books “fun and cool.” SmartMoney looks at what’s fueling the change. Kid’s books finally translate well thanks to last year’s debut of the Kindle Fire and Nook Color; the devices allow kids to hear stories read aloud even when mom and dad aren’t around; and e-books are cheaper (an average of $4.57 versus $8.29 for a paperback).

Nigeria: Can E-Books Replace Paper Books?

Up to 43 per cent of Nigerians would prefer to read electronic books (e-books), a Daily Trust online poll shows, though the larger percentage still prefer to read a “normal” book.

The poll asked which kind of books readers preferred, between print books and e-books. A little more than 57 per cent of the 1,579 visitors who participated in the poll chose normal books, leaving 43 per cent who preferred e-books.

The figure shows some awareness about the latest book technology sweeping through the world of publishing.

Data from 250 publishers around the world show sales of consumer e-books increase by 366 per cent last year, according to the Publishers Association.

Last year alone, e-book sales became equivalent to 6 per cent of consumer physical book sales by value, it highlighted in its report.

First Edition Design eBook Publishing

eBooks now outshine hardcover books

“The beauty of e-books is that they are so versatile, you can read on your phone, computer or several brands of e-readers. You can also send them digitally to any part of the world,” says Myne Whitman, author of Heart to Mend and Rekindled. Both works of the Nigerian writer based in Seattle, USA, have been stocked on major online ebook retail stores.

“Currently, almost 50,000 copies of all my ebooks combined has been downloaded. That is five times more than the paperback copies,” she told Daily Trust.

“Most of the fan mail I have received have been from those who read the e-versions of my books, maybe because these people spend more time on the internet.”

The admission is telling for several reasons. Zubairu Atta, a consultant on book strategy and member of Abuja Literary Society estimates awareness may reach 60% of Nigeria – and “is still catching on particularly because the concept of payment is still an issue.”

“A lot of people are still not very conversant with using their ATM card and those who have credit cards are not sure about it.”

The basic infrastructure needed for an e-book market to take off is still flagging, and Atta says the “Nigerian market is before creation –it hasn’t been born properly.”

Novelist Netty Ejike says many people she has come across know little or nothing about ebooks.

“That is not alarming. To be interested in ebooks means you have your own personal computer, or at least you have one you can have instant access to,” says the author of Obsession, His Sin, Stormy Affair, An Impious Proposal.

“Talking about e-book readers is going a bit too far,” she adds. Highend stores in Abuja stock the latest models of tablet computers and phones, but none has an e-reader on offer.

It doesn’t mean Nigerians don’t use e-books. Recent research has found a growing number of undergraduate and postgraduate students read e-books.

Publishers offer academic textbook in digital formats in addition to hardcopy. And it is quite easy to download digital copies of textbooks in computing, engineering and statistics than wait to pick up one in the post. The problem is paying for it.

A survey of e-book use at the University of Ibadan in which 750 people participated found no respondent paid for their electronic textbooks. They got them as free downloads from websites offering free e-books or borrowed from friends who in turn got the e-books as free downloads.

Online stores selling normal books in Nigeria depend on banks to get their money. Not many buyers would want to run for a bank teller to buy a N400 novel. An online credit system is desired but must overcome scepticism that dogs anything digital in Nigeria.

Atta reads e-books but, “buying them online is too cumbersome,” he says. He points to elaborate scams in which download pages freeze up and links to download e-books automatically disappear once payment is confirmed in online transaction.

Those who have read e-books love the feel of technology but it is just “not the same satisfaction,” he says, admitting he is old fashioned.

“Despite that, I have a lot of experience reading both e-books and paper copies. I find more satisfaction and trust in reading paper copies, because it is in my hand.”

E-books require power to a computer or laptop and electricity remains serious problems, not to mention internet access to download them. Additionally, there are the children to consider.

“I am very scared of having them read e-books on computers. Before you know it sometimes they stray onto the internet and get things that destroy their attention. If you take them, give them a paper book for an hour a day, you see that they benefit more — are more disciplined, more focused,” says Atta.

Netty is still looking to have her titles carried on Debonair when the online store begins carrying electronic books. Maybe sales could reach massive ratios of 500 e-books to 1 print copy, she hopes.

“On the other hand, paperbacks are still very much in vogue in Nigeria (for the few who are still avid readers), and until the awareness of e-books is well established, they will continue to outsell the digital format.”

Daily Trust (Abuja)
