Bookstore Chain Opens In Hong Kong #FED_ebooks #Books #Asia #eslite

Hong Kong’s Book Scene Gets a Boost

At first glance, Hong Kong seems an enviable hub for bibliophiles: It’s home to a buzzing book fair, a well-regarded literary festival, two creative-writing programs and Asia’s most prestigious literary prize. But in terms of bookstores, it has so far lagged behind other Asian cities such as Tokyo, Taipei and even Bangkok.

Famed Taiwan bookstore chain Eslite opens in Hong Kong on Aug. 11.

That may be about to change with the arrival of Eslite, a Taiwanese bookstore chain famous not only for an extensive collection of books but also in-house art galleries, cultural events, designer products and cafés.

On Saturday, Eslite opens in Hysan Place, a mall in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay district. The three-story shop will stretch to 41,000 square feet, making it the city’s largest bookstore, and will stock some 100,000 titles that readers can browse and buy seven days a week. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the store will be open 24 hours a day—perfect for night owls in a city that doesn’t sleep.

Eslite was founded in 1989, the year after Taiwan’s military dictatorship lifted a ban on newspapers and magazines, and it went on to become a patron of the island’s cultural renaissance. Its 48 branches host more than 3,000 activities a year, including lectures, readings, concerts and art exhibitions.

The Eslite store in Causeway Bay will stock 100,000 titles.

Founder Robert Wu, who ran a successful catering business before opening the first Eslite on Taipei’s Dunhua Road, kept the bookstore afloat for 17 years before it became profitable in 2006. “Eslite is a cultural phenomenon,” he said in Hong Kong at the Design for Asia Awards last December. “It’s all about the people, the place, the culture.”

Eslite will mark its entry into Hong Kong with two exhibitions and 30 activities over the next month, including sessions with local authors such as cultural critic Ma Ka-fai and a concert with singer-songwriter Chet Lam.

Like its flagship branches in Taiwan, the Hysan Place location will include a music and video boutique, stationery, a teahouse, a coffee shop, an art gallery and an event room. English- and foreign-language books will make up 40% of the selection, compared with 25% at most Taiwan stores.

Meanwhile, the store’s opening has prompted other local bookstores to up their game with renovations and an expanded selection. Commercial Press, Hong Kong’s biggest bookstore chain, has retrained staff, renovated its Causeway Bay branch and doubled its selection of English-language books.

Though Eslite’s expansion has garnered buzz, some cultural critics are greeting the chain with ambivalence. Au Wai-lin, founder of Hong Kong journal “C for Culture,” worries about its impact on independent bookstores, which specialize in nonmainstream books and titles banned in mainland China—genres that Eslite has excelled at selling in Taiwan.

“It may be an exciting event for many people and most of the media coverage is positive,” says Ms. Au. “But what I’m concerned about is it’s probably [leading to] a crisis of the existing local bookshops.”

Others take a rosier view. “In general I think it’s a good thing, because they will be hosting lots of cultural activities, which could help the cultural scene in Hong Kong,” says Daniel Lee, co-owner of Hong Kong Reader, a Mongkok bookstore that holds regular discussions and readings.

“We see more and more people into reading,” he says. “More people are paying attention to politics and social issues, and when people want to do something about it, they need to read about it first.”

When Writing Goes From a Hobby to a Business

Guest Blog By: Linda Maria Frank

Did I ever think that as a science teacher I would write a book? The key that made it happen for me was teaching something that became a passion. Trite? I’m not sure about that. Passion is a word I often see connected to success.

Teaching forensic science at the high school and college levels dovetailed with my love of mystery books, and a childhood hero-worship of Nancy Drew. In fact, I market my books as Nancy Drew meets CSI, mystery stories for girls of all ages.

Author Linda Maria Frank

It all started in the high school library where I began to write case studies for my students, to make the science come alive through stories that included intrigue and sympathetic characters. The characters were so sympathetic that I decided to turn the plots and the characters of those case studies into my Annie Tillery Mystery series, The Madonna Ghost and Girl with Pencil, Drawing.

Producing the books required knowing how to write a book. I was not a trained writer. I found a writing course that met my requirements, and learned what I needed to know to get that story in book form.

Self-publishing had not yet exploded into the phenomenon it has become, so years went by before I screwed up the courage to publish.

The climate seemed right in 2009. I approached the self-publishing company I used at the time, and I began the process of submissions, revisions, editing, proof-reading, cover design, cover- copy and securing publishing rights. When that book was done I moved on to the next book with the same publisher.

Next came marketing. Marketing is a bear! New to this book business, I had no idea how much was out there by way of opportunities on the Internet. Signing up with First Edition Design Publishing was a no-brainer. It saved the time it would have cost me to get my eBook versions in so many different markets.

I am working on number three in my series, and am glad I self-published because it gives me lots of control over the entire process.

I’m digging deep into the world of marketing. I even do a program with another author about our journey through self-publishing, “So You Want to Write a Story?”  Social media, so important to anyone who markets, can almost be a full time job. There are also blog radio shows and local access TV.

What a surprise that my favorite classroom experience would turn into being a published author. If you have a good idea and want to produce a book, check out my website. If you are a published author and want to be on my TV show, “The Writer’s Dream”, get in touch using the contact information below.

About Linda Maria Frank: With the introduction of the Annie Tillery Mysteries, Linda has been happily launching a new career as author. Inspired by a childhood passion for Nancy Drew books and the popular television series, CSI, she successfully married an appealing heroine (Annie Tillery) with a gripping story plots to create these new fiction books for mystery readers. The Madonna Ghost has earned the distinctive “Editor’s Choice” and “Rising Star” awards. Girl With Pencil Drawing, the second book in the series, ramps up the adventure and suspense. Annie stays one step ahead of the bad guys by the skin of her teeth.

Before venturing into writing, Frank’s first love was teaching science, her assignments ranging from Middle School to graduate level courses at Hofstra and Adelphi Universities. It was the forensic science courses that gave her the story lines for her heroine, Annie, who is based on a composite of former beloved students.

Presently Frank is involved in a project at LTV in East Hampton called “The Writer’s Dream,” a series of shows with writers who discuss different aspects of the profession.

Frank is a native New Yorker, who enjoys sailing, cross country skiing and traveling. Today, when Frank is not writing chapters for the next Annie Tillery Mystery, she is out there doing presentation of her books. New Venture to Fansource Book Events

Looking to address the major problem with promotional book events—the dreaded barely attended reading/signing—science author Andrew Kessler is launching a new online venture called Togather.com, a “fansourcing” platform that allows authors or their fans to propose an author event and get commitments from fans planning to attend well before the event is held. Much like a crowdfunding site like Kickstarter, Togather.com allows an author to know in advance whether there’s enough interest and support to hold an event at all.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market  Togather.com is free for authors and starts August 6 with an authors-only portal for writers to sign up and receive an account. The account will allow them to set up events on a custom author event page that can be circulated through social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. “The event page allows authors to ‘fansource,’ ” Kessler said, “set up a tour, schedule events, tweak the details, and solicit support for the event before the author arrives.”

Kessler is the author of Martian Summer: Robot Arms, Cowboy Spacemen and My 90 Days with the Phoenix Mars Mission (Pegasus, 2011), a smart-but-regular-guy’s account of spending three months camped out in mission control for NASA’s 2008 Phoenix Mars landing in order to write about the Mars expedition. Kessler said that far too often he arrived at his book readings to find “lots of empty chairs and three people. It can be a little depressing.”

“Well-organized book events work great, if they are promoted well,” he said, and book events create what he called “a halo effect” that generates word-of-mouth and “a networked effect” that can lead to a series of new book events and more book sales. To promote Martian Summer, Kessler was faced with the task of trying to connect with the more than 400 astronomy groups around the country, groups that would be his best audience.

“What if you promoted the event before you committed to do it?” he asked himself. In a phone interview with PW, Kessler outlined how Togather works. Using the Togather account, an author can decide what kind of support he or she will require to actually hold the event—sell, say, 20 books, or get RSVPs from 60 people if it’s a school or free event, or sell tickets. Since one of the criteria for an event can be book sales, Togather is also organized to sell books. Fans can go to the page and propose additional events, and the author can review the proposal, accept it or ask for changes, or tweak the level of commitments.

The site lets authors notify their fans how many people it will take to reach a certain level of book sales (Kessler consulted with booksellers on this). “People can promise to buy your book or Togather gives you the flexibility to hold free events,” he said. Togather can be used to set up events anywhere, from bookstores and auditoriums to private homes for, say, a book club that gets its members to buy a certain number of books.

Once decided, the offer to hold an event will show up as a box on the author’s page asking fans to commit by clicking through. For book buys or other financial transactions, the site will take credit card numbers but not process the sale until the desired commitment level is achieved—if there’s not enough interest, the event is canceled and no one is charged. Author pages also provide the usual comments field, a listing of the author’s schedule, and information about the book and author. Kessler said, “It turns fans into your publicists.” Kessler has been beta testing the site with his own book events (Togather.com/Kessler), scheduling a combination of real and mock events. While the site will be free to authors, Kessler said they plan to monetize Togather through book sales and later through possible fees for tour support; there is also a 5% processing fee for ticketed or honorarium events. The site also provides data on reader behavior tracked through the site.

Togather’s cofounder is another author, Aaron Shapiro (Users Not Customers: Who Really Determines the Success of Your Business), who is also the CEO of Huge, a creator of digital products. The venture began as an incubator project by Huge and has received venture capital funding from the Interpublic Group. It has a staff of about 10 freelancers and full-timers and enough financing for a year. At launch the site will be for authors only, because “they have so few tools to help them with promotion.” But Kessler also said, “Once we scale up, people will be able to go to the site and search for authors and their events.”

Christian Fiction Undergoing a Resurgence via eReaders

Christian fiction and religious ebooks are undergoing a quiet resurgence due to the widespread availability of electronic book readers. Though erotica sales have dominated the digital and tangible industries this year, Christian books seem be generating more and more consistent sales.

Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market Christian ebook book American Association of Publishers Religious and Christian Fiction industry publisherEbook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market Ebook Publishing Design Edition First Graphic Aggregators Ebooks Publishers Distribution POD Designing Approved Aggregator How Services Academic Distributor Chapter Submission Professional Firsteditiondesignpublishing.com published book market According to the American Association of Publishers, Christian content is doing quite well. Revenue growth increased by 7% in 2011, which generated almost $1.45 billion — driven largely by sales of e-books. Meanwhile, a separate study dived into the semantics of ebooks. It found that digital content accounted for nearly one-third of all Christian fiction sold in 2011. Bold numbers, but really quite telling because the genre had increased by almost six times from 2010.

Erotica and Christian fiction are strange bedfellows and normally do not have anything in common at all. One of the similarities is the privacy and anonymity factors that drive digital sales and provide a virtual security blanket. When you read ebooks in public, no one knows what type of book you are engaged in. There is no book jacket or cover art that proclaims to the world what you are doing. Digital books remove the embarrassment factor of guilty pleasures or personal choices in reading.

Patchen Barrs, author of The Erotic Engine provided further insight on why erotica and Christian fiction are doing so well in today’s digital climate. “Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James and religious ones like Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo are achieving similar success in the ebook market. Besides death, there are two experiences universal in the human condition: sex and faith. As far back as the 14th Century households had to be wealthy to afford a single book. Often that manuscript was a prayer book with erotic pictures in the margins. They served both body and soul.”

The entire Christian fiction and non-fiction industries are changing up their business model and appealing to a new customer, the technology savvy. The Family Christian line of stores in the USA has just released a new tablet that is exclusively geared towards the family and the Christian faith. Many companies have issued Android Apps, such as YouVersion Bible. It currently has over 554,388 reviews and 50,000,000 downloads since it launched.

The Religious and Christian Fiction industry, as a whole, has grown by leaps and bounds since 2009. This year will be a record year of growth due to the sheer amount of stores that deliver digital content. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords,  and Kobo deliver eBooks on a wider footprint then ever before. For the first time many customers in Canada, UK,  Denmark,  Netherlands and Japan are enjoying unparallelled access to quality content. Competing eBook stores also do a better job at marketing then the actual publisher does. It is easier than ever before to buy books while on the go via WIFI and not have to advertise to the world the essence of your faith, unless you want to.
