#EBooks: The Unlikely Savior Of The Hardback #FED_ebooks #ebook #Author

From: www.booktrade.info

Faced with flatlining sales, the end of the money-spinning Twilight and Harry Potter series and severe competition from rival media, it has been hard for book publishers to feel optimistic recently. But 2012 began with a glimpse of sunlight through the clouds. Hardback books have been thrown an unlikely lifeline by ebooks. As a result publishers are reassessing their strategy towards a format declared dead only a year ago.

The format was predicted to be the chief victim in the bloodbath following the rapid rise of digital books, but data from Nielsen BookScan, which monitors sales in eight book markets worldwide, shows second publication paperbacks are under more threat from ereaders like Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPad.

Though the data shows a decline in print sales across all mature markets of between 1.7% and 14.8%, the percentage decline in hardback sales is lower than that of paperbacks, 8.5% compared to 11.7%. Speaking with publishers, the news looks even more optimistic.  More…

I was browsing the Kindle Store today when I realized something. It’s been quite some time since I last looked at the higher eBook prices, and that’s always been entertaining. Now, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but some Kindle eBooks are rather expensive. I like to sort through the list and chuckle while pondering if anyone actually buys the eBooks. The most expensive eBook currently in the Kindle Store costs $6,232, and it’s on sale for a healthy 20% off. The 5th most expensive Kindle eBook costs $5,300. All 5 titles are from the same publisher (Springer) and they look to be reference manuals that you mind find on the shelves in an institution.

  2. Compounds with 13 to 162 Carbon Atoms
  3. Noble Metal Systems

Paradise Regained is a colorful tapestry of real events woven into a spiritual realm. The reader is  suddenly  surrounded by unforgettable characters in fast action scenes that lead to the tragic death of six young Coptic Martyrs in front of St. Mary Coptic Orthodox church in Nag Hammadi, Egypt.

With powerful words, Ed Shafik transport the readers from the hot and humid desert weather to the Third Heaven, which St. Paul visited but didn’t describe what he had seen.

Edward Shafik is a master story teller that reminds me of literary giants such as Leo Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, and Naguib Mahfouz, the first Egyptian writer to win a Nobel Prize.

Paradise Regained is a political thriller destined to entertain and inform readers for many generations to come.” — Mounir Fargallah,  Author, Play Wright, Speaker, Novelist.

Report shows Kindle Fire owners are most likely to use device to read e-books #ebooks #author #writer #FED_ebooks

Analysts don’t know how many Kindle Fires have been sold any more than you do. Sometimes, though, they do cool stuff like an analysis  of their family’s Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) Prime usage—or, in the case of a new Citigroup report released today, a survey on Kindle usage and Prime membership.

Some tidbits from Citi analyst Mark Mahaney’s survey of over 1,100 “U.S. Internet consumers” (so just imagine “Citi says” in front of all these bullets):

—Twenty-three percent of survey respondents own a Kindle e-reader—just a Kindle, not a Kindle or some other type of e-reader. A July 2011 Pew report estimated U.S. adults’ e-reader ownership at 12 percent, hence Citi’s assertion that “Kindle ownership has increased about 100% over the past 7 months”). Six percent of respondents own a Kindle Fire.

—“We see Amazon’s eReader revenue contribution as actually materially greater than its Tablet revenue contribution for the foreseeable future.”

—“E-reader owners purchase about 2.4 books per month….this survey finding is higher than our prior assumption of about 1.5 books purchased per month by Kindle owners.” Also, 24 percent of respondents said they’d purchased five or more e-books in the past 30 days.

—Kindle Fire owners are most likely to use their device to read e-books (35 percent), browse the Internet (18 percent), and play games (18 percent).

—Eighty-one percent of Kindle Fire owners have purchased digital products, 10 percent have purchased physical products and 8 percent have purchased nothing.

—About 20 percent of Amazon shoppers in the survey were also Prime subscribers—most through a paid annual membership (58 percent). Also, Citi agrees with me that this Bloomberg report on Prime subscribers is stupid: “12 percent of Amazon shoppers in our survey are paying Prime subs. Although a relatively low %, this would seem to suggest that the recent report that Amazon has only 2-3MM Prime Subs was a bunch of bull-twinkie.”

—“Prime subs shop more frequently (22x per year
vs. 9x purchases per year done by non-Prime subs) and spend more dollars ($458 vs. $310, or about 48% more than non-Prime subs.”

—Finally, for those who just really like analysts’ estimates of devices sold: Citi estimates that 30 million Kindle e-readers will be sold in 2012, compared to 12 million Kindle Fires. And Citi estimates Amazon’s e-book sales at $6.2 billion this year, up 176 percent from 2011.

Bestselling #Authors & #eBooks from BooksOnBoard #FED_ebooks

WEBWIRE – Monday, March 19, 2012

BooksOnBoard’s bestsellers lists have seen little change this week, but with a particularly interesting development: Sherrilyn Kenyon’s latest young adult fantasy, Infamous, has dominated the lists in both the US and the UK.

“Infamous is one of a rather small set within the young adult fantasy genre” remarked Mindy Erickson, BooksOnBoard’s Merchandising and PR Specialist. “In a genre overflowing with female protagonists, Infamous follows Nick Gautier, a teenager tasked with helping save the world from evil while simultaneously juggling the pressures of school and his social life. Although names like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Artemis Fowl cast long shadows, male protagonists such as Nick are not this genre’s norm”

Infamous is the third in the Chronicles of Nick series, a spin-off of Kenyon’s wildly popular Dark-Hunter series. “Kenyon’s flexibility as a writer is obvious; she crafted a vibrant fantasy world for a steamy adult romance series, then reexamined it through the lens of a young adult author” Erickson said. “I would very much like to see more authors–across all genres–doing the same.”

E-books click as library visitors fall #FED_ebooks #library #ebooks #author #writer

Knox Weekly    Bayswater Vic Australia

by Tara McGrath

ONCE UPON A time, libraries were places to hunt out an old and dusty book – but that image is quickly being replaced by e-books, free wi-fi and interactive websites.

First Edition Design eBook Publishing

However, as technology advances, the number of people visiting Eastern Regional Libraries branches in person is down by almost 500,000 in the past five years.

In the 2006-07 financial year there were 2.5 million physical visits to ERL branches, but in 2010-11 that dropped to just over 2 million. Website hits rose to 1.4million in 2010-11 from 478,406 hits in 2006-07.

ERL information services manager Paul Burden said this was because website redevelopments now featured e-resources and online learning for children.

E-books have been available on the ERL website since June last year and there have been 14,000 checkouts in that time.

Mr Burden said those numbers were rapidly increasing, with 2800 books checked out during February, and a spike in rentals just after Christmas last year.

Mr Burden said ERL had about 7000 electronic titles available, including e-books and audio books.

But Amazon Kindles cannot use the ERL software yet because of copyright problems with the e-book platform Overdrive. “There’s an 82-year-old lady in a retirement village who keeps asking when they’re going to be compatible because she has a Kindle she wants to use,” Mr Burden said.

Knoxfield bookworm Annette Schlafrig, 57, reads ERL e-books on her Netbook. Ms Schlafrig said the books were especially suited to older readers because they could change the font size.

“E-books have also been great for me while I’ve had a broken arm. I’ve read book after book but haven’t actually borrowed any physical books.”

Knox residents can learn how to use these new devices at a ‘technology petting zoo’ lined up at ERL branches.
